Theirs was a May-December romance in the truest sense of the word. He was 40 years her senior. Old enough to be her father, or even her grandfather. She was but a girl, barely flowering into womanhood. But the love bug had struck. Time meant nothing. She was mature for her age and he was very young at heart for his. Had it not been for the enormous gap between their generations they would have been perfect for each other. She had no care for the age difference and neither did he. They decided to buck society's idea of what a couple should look like. Old doesn't have to stay with old, nor young with young. Sometimes love is all that matters. Sometimes love is the best bridge over those gaps. Against their families' advice they married. An unlikely pair making their way in the world. He should have been looking forward to retirement but building her a house that she would make into a home was a much more pressing need. And build it they did. Together. Their house and their lives. Always in love and always filled with respect for each other and those around them.
Life is filled with rules and exceptions. Their lives were the exception. Who would have believed that 2 people so far apart in age could be so close in every other aspect? No one would have guessed that it would "work out" but it did. For 20+ years. She kept him young and he kept her safe. A success story.
Like all stories, there is a beginning and there is an end. Sadly he passed away Saturday after living a long good life. The best of those years he would tell you were in what should have been the Winter of his life but she had brought him back to Springtime. He doted on her and was the love of her life.
He will be missed, by more than just her but especially by her.

I am sorry to hear that. Nicely told, Boo.
This is a beautiful story. It reminds me of my Grandma and Step-Grandpa.
